The worst part about driving west is that when the sun goes down, it’s right in your face. And so I found myself squinting and rubbing my eyes a lot to keep from going blind.
Kristy was asleep. Why the hell did I let her in my car again? Oh yeah. It’s because she’s gorgeous and for some reason, that made the fact that I really don’t like her much seem irrelevant. But did she have to fall asleep? The least she could do is keep me entertained.
When she started to snore, I put on music. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Softly at first, but I kept pushing the volume up until it was a dull roar.
Well she was an American girl, raised on promises. She couldn’t help thinking that there was a little more to life somewhere else. After all it was a great big world with lots of places to run to. Yeah and if she had to die tryin’ she had one little promise she was gonna keep. Oh yeah. All right. Take it easy, baby, make it last all night (make it last all night). She was … an American girl.
I sang along. Kristy woke up. Slowly, but she woke up. I only knew because she stopped snoring. Her eyes were hidden behind sunglassees. I didn’t even know what color they were.
“I was dreaming I was at a Tom Petty concert,” she said. “Turns out I was right.”
I turned the music down and blushed slightly.
“Don’t worry. I was enjoying it.” She started singing along.
There is no sense in pretending. Your eyes give you away. Something inside you is feeling like I do. We’ve said all there is to say.
I started singing with her.
Baby! Break down, go ahead and give it to me. Break down, honey, take me through the night (baby baby break down) Break down, now, standin’ there, can’t you see? Break down, it’s all right. It’s all right. It’s all right.
